With support from the EU, Sweden, and Austria, and in collaboration with the USAID Economic Security Program, Svaneti hosted a world-class sports competition organised by the Freeride World Tour.

Freeriding, a winter sport that involves skiing or snowboarding on difficult and mountainous terrain in untracked snow, was chosen to be held in Svaneti due to its ideal terrain and climate conditions that meet international standards.

„The Freeride World Tour provides an excellent opportunity for Svaneti to showcase its potential in mountain-ski sports and tourism on the world stage. Through the GRETA project, a joint effort between the European Union, Sweden, and Austria, we aim to promote the development of mountain tourism. By hosting international competitions, Svaneti can leverage this opportunity to promote the region's tourism potential. “ - Thomas Mühlmann, Amba

“ - Thomas Mühlmann, Ambassador of Austria to Georgia.

International competitions such as this play a crucial role in positioning the region on the global tourism map and attracting local and international athletes and spectators.

"Well-designed and managed tourism can make a significant contribution to sustainable development, create decent jobs and generate new trade opportunities. In order to maximise positive impact for Svaneti, with the joint efforts of the European Union, Sweden and Austria, we currently support the creation of a destination development plan for the Svaneti region and promote Svaneti as a brand on European and international markets. All this serves the development and economic strengthening of this beautiful region." - points out Dominik Papenheim - Team Leader for Economic Development and Trade at the EU Delegation to Georgia.

In addition to the sports competitions, the Freeride Week in Svaneti featured cultural spectacles and gastronomic experiences, showcasing the unique culture and cuisine of the region. International athletes were treated to unforgettable impressions of Mestia and Svaneti iconic peak, the "white lady" Mount Tetnuldi.

"This event is an excellent demonstration of coordinated efforts by donors. With joint cooperation from the European Union, Sweden, Austria, and the USAID Economic Security Program, we aimed to enhance the potential and awareness of adventure tourism in the remote highland regions of Georgia and, in turn, bolster the economy. Our objective is to achieve tangible results such as bustling hotels, busy restaurants, job creation from tourism development, and a wide range of tourist attractions available throughout the year.“- says Marika Olson - Director of the USAID Economic Growth Office in Georgia.

By taking small but significant steps and emphasising the exemplary aspects, we can effectively promote mountain resorts and create a vibrant tourism industry.

“The impact of the event in Svaneti can be measured by two indicators. The first is economic, as the athletes, coaches, delegation members, and supporters bring additional income to the region as tourists. However, the more important and interesting impact is the increased awareness of the region and its tourism potential, which can lead to long-term benefits.” Guram Vashakmadze, organiser of mountain tourism events.

The International Ski Federation-affiliated organisation, Freeride World Tour, recognizes the potential of the Svaneti region and anticipates that the region will be capable of hosting top-level competitions in the future.

„Hosting competitions of this level is important for the growth of sports and tourism industries as foreign visitors, participants, and their supporters become ambassadors for the region, sharing their experiences and impressions. This word-of-mouth promotion can create a chain reaction, attracting others who share similar interests and desires for new experiences. “- Says Levan Metreveli, co-organizer of the Svaneti Freeride Week.

Finally, with support from the EU, Sweden, and Austria, the successful organisation of Freeride Week in Svaneti demonstrates the importance of collaborative efforts and engagement from local stakeholders and partners in promoting the region's tourism potential. With their intensive involvement, Svaneti positioned itself on the world tourist map as an attractive destination for adventure tourism. This achievement has paved the way for local partner organisations to host similar high-level sports and tourism events, attracting foreign and local visitors to discover Svaneti - The hidden treasure of Georgia.
